Introducing DevSpec: The realistic way to bring AI software development to your team
This isn't magic vibe coding for solo non-technical people, and it isn't a closed-off toy just for engineers. DevSpec is the practical answer to introducing AI software development to your team today — so you can get started, be productive, and stay in control.
By Ali Price
Up until now, AI software development has fallen into pretty much three categories.
First, you've had the promise for completely non-technical people acting individually to build software in the cloud as if by magic — one-shot vibe coding, where you just say what you want and the whole thing is built for you, even if you have no technical understanding whatsoever. It's easy to present something as very simple, but it gets very hard very quickly. The deeper you get into software development, the more you realize how many aspects there are to consider: support, infrastructure, billing, maintenance, and releases. Who's going to do the maintenance? Who's going to do the hosting? What happens the second something slightly doesn't go according to plan? It's a way for non-technical people to get in over their heads very fast.
At the other end of the spectrum, you have tools built by developers, for developers. They're mostly focused on individual developer experiences, or they sit right down at the infrastructure level with a complex, self-hosted setup and a lot of assumptions already made going into it. Sometimes they'll have a bridge to Slack, Teams, or Telegram so that non-technical teammates at least have a channel to speak to the developer. But that's really a one-way door — a way for them to ask for what they want and wait for the developer to report back. They're not really in the process.
The third category is tools released by the big AI labs themselves. At this stage, they're dipping their toe into moving up the stack: they already make and host the models, so they're throwing things at the wall to see what sticks — whether that's letting your team talk to their models in the cloud, or letting one person drive a whole fleet of cloud agents.
Today, we're introducing DevSpec: a fourth way, and what we believe is the best, most realistic way for real small teams to use AI for software development right now.

What We Believe
DevSpec is founded on three core beliefs.
First, the best ideas always come from humans. AI is great at implementing, great at reflecting, and great at refining — but it doesn't come up with ideas by itself. It's only as good as the input you give it. And all the best ideas in your company belong to the people in the company who actually know the business. They understand the product, they understand the real world, and they know what they're trying to achieve. That's the input you want.
Second, you have to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical people, because that line is blurring fast with AI. Non-technical people increasingly need the tools to steer the development process so they can turn their great ideas into something real. And technical people aren't just implementing code anymore. A computer is better and faster at writing ones and zeros than a person can ever be, especially now. And in a world moving at a breakneck rate — where there are no certifications for what's next and the people moving fastest are teaching themselves — the real role for technical people is to be part of the strategic discussion: understanding why they're building what they're building, and advising how to bring AI to the company so they don't fall behind.
Third, the hardest thing about AI software development is keeping everyone on the same page so decisions don't get undone. Right now, AI models behave like they're working solely for whoever is instructing them in that moment. And they flatter to deceive — every idea you come up with, they tell you it's the best idea ever. Huge amounts of time and money are being spent right now by people working in their own separate spaces, building out experimental ideas and trying to sell them back to their team. Everyone's AI is only talking to them. They don't share the same memory, they don't share the same context, and they have no notion of who's who. According to the AI, everyone instructing it may as well be the CEO.
We think AI is at its best when it knows exactly what the team wants, what decisions have already been made, what's settled and what's an experiment, and how everything fits into the bigger picture. When someone from marketing wanted one thing a month ago, someone from sales wants something today, and someone from accounts wants something tomorrow — how do they all fit together? Making sense of all of that is where AI can actually be extraordinarily powerful.
How DevSpec Works in Practice
DevSpec ties the whole thing together. It gives your team a shared space to talk to each other and a space to build together.
For non-technical people, it's incredibly easy. You just jump in and talk in natural language. You're in the same shared rooms as your teammates, Dev — your team's always-on AI who knows your project's history, documents, tasks, and decisions — and the coding agents connected by your developers.
Teammates and AI can hash ideas out together simultaneously. The AI helps facilitate the conversation, refine ideas, and connect how today's request fits with what was decided last month — making sure that everyone is heard and nobody's voice gets lost, even if you aren't technical or the loudest person in the room.
And humans always have the final say. Anyone can bring their best ideas or try an experiment, and it never gets messy. Everything stays coherent. You always know what you're doing and what direction you're going in, and whoever is in a position of responsibility has the final approval process — effortlessly.
Real Ownership, Without the Magic Act
For all that ease, we're not trying to pretend that software happens by magic in the cloud — because the cloud is just someone else's computer. We're not pretending there's no such thing as a Git repo, or a database instance you need keys for and want to own yourself, or separate providers for logging and uptime monitoring.
And while you can always talk to Dev in the room at any time, the coding agents that build your software run directly on your developers' machines — right where their existing tools and their cost-effective AI subscription plans already live. That makes it faster, cheaper, and more efficient from day one.
Above all, DevSpec keeps you and your company in control. It's your project, your infrastructure, your stuff. DevSpec helps you understand what's going on, manage it, and steer things in the right direction — without trapping you or making you dependent on us. There's nothing crazily difficult to set up or learn: you can be up and running in five minutes, while keeping full ownership of everything you build.
We're not saying you don't need developers. You will need developers. This isn't magic vibe coding for non-technical people, and it isn't a closed-off toy just for engineers. It's the real, practical answer to introducing AI software development to your team today — so you can get started, be productive, and stay in control.
